Zhongdian (Shangri-La) Trance Music

This music accompanies a "trance dance" performed by the monks of Ganden Sumtseling Gompa, also known "Sumtseling Monastery" or "Songzanlin Si." The monastery is located near the Southeastern edge of the Tibetan Plateau in Yunnan Province, north of the city of Zhongdian or "Shangri-La."

World's Largest Buddha

LeShan DaFo (Happy Mountain Big Buddha) is located in central China's Sichuan province. This seventy-one meter tall Buddha statue was carved into a cliff face about 1,300 years ago. It gained the title of "World's Largest Buddha" after the Taliban government destroyed the cliff-carved Buddha statues in Bamyan, Afghanistan.

Monkey Eating Crackers

Monk Mantra

This is the head monk of a six hundred year old temple located on a hill overlooking the "old town" section of Zhongdian city in Yunnan province, China. He is chanting in Tibetan. Though he did not pay any attention to us, he did eventually pause when his mobile phone rang to answer it and carry a conversation.
